What to look for in a Towing Service

The most basic things to look for in choosing a towing service are also the most obvious. When you call a tow truck you want to know that it will arrive soon and be able to tow your car without damaging it. You want a friendly, courteous driver who know their way around the area and can tow your vehicle where you want it to go without getting lost or 'taking the long way'. You want an honest tow truck company with clear honest pricing that will not try to nickel and dime you. You want them to be experts in what they do, like all professions tow truck drivers require specialized skills and knowledge and as such there are those who have more and those who have less of it. Let's take these points in turn.

First and foremost is availability. Cars rarely need roadside assistance when we expect them to. It's impossible to plan for a breakdown, an accident, a lockout or some other misfortune. That's just how it goes with cars, whatever the problem is, whether it be a mechanical problem, need for a tow or even windshield repair, it never happens when you can plan it. When it comes to towing they must be able to respond when you call them and not hours later. Lack of response is more than just inconvenient. It can be a safety hazard depending on where  the driver and the vehicle are. Along the narrow shoulder of a dark highway with other cars speeding down it is a precarious position to be in. The other aspect to availability besides just being able to come out whenever needed is the range a tow truck company operates in. Most tow truck companies have a limited range they will work in, and in the haze of a situation where a vehicle is unexpectedly inoperable, you don't want to have to go through multiple companies and call around until you find one that is both open and nearby.

Related to availability and responsiveness is equipment. The layman probably doesn't give tow trucks much thought in their day to day life. Even when you unexpectedly  suddenly need a tow truck you're most likely just concerned with getting your vehicle from point a to point b and don't give what kind of tow truck you need a second thought (an exception might be if you need heavy duty towing, but that's no the general population). The reality is however that there are differences between kinds of tow trucks. Not only are those difference significant, they also have a direct bearing on the whether or not the tow truck company can tow your vehicle safely with damaging it or even at all.

Years ago the most commonly used tow truck was the so-called hook and chain variety. These tow truck used a hook connected to a chain to go around one of the axles of a car or truck. Well you can imagine that this kind of towing has the downside of the potential to pull the axle from underneath the car. Besides that, one pair of wheels are always in contact with the roadway which increases the possibility that the underside of the car hit something or damage the transmission if the car is in gear while being pulled and not driving itself.  Unfortunately, many tow service companies still used this kind of outdated equipment. An improvement on the old hook and chain design is the wheel lift. There are still many of these kinds of tow trucks in operation today. These tow trucks work by placing a pneumonic hoist underneath a pair of wheels of the car. This has the advantage of cradling the wheels of the car leaving the axles undisturbed. This is a safe tow truck for two wheel drive car because the wheels unconnected to the transmission can be left to be pulled along the roadway. However there is still risk to the vehicle through damage from the roadway. Better still is the flatbed tow truck. A flatbed tow truck works by using two hooks to attach to tow slots on the front of the vehicle. The hooks are attached to pulls that crank the vehicle onto the lowered flatbed. The flatbed then is raised back in place and the vehicle secured to the flatbed. Flatbed tow trucks have the advantage of keep the car completely off of the road service, protecting the underside, wheels, and transmission of the vehicle.  They are the only option for four wheel and all wheel drive vehicles. Besides flat bed tow trucks, there are what are called boom or crane tow trucks. These tow trucks have a boom or crane on the back with rubber harness on the end of it. They are used to tow vehicles that are difficult to extract. The harness is placed on vehicle while the crane lifts the vehicle.

Besides the right equipment, availability and responsiveness, a good tow truck company should have superior expertise and professionalism. Expertise in towing relates to what kind of truck to send out based on the situation described to the dispatcher. Making sure the tow truck is properly connected to the vehicle to towed. Though it sounds simple, every car make and model has it's particularities in how it should be connected to the tow truck.  The driver should be experienced in driving a tow truck with a vehicle being towed. Driving a tow truck is not the same as driving a typical everyday sedan and does require some skill. The driver should also be professional at every step of the process. They should be polite when they arrive communicate clearly exactly what services will be provided.

And finally, perhaps the most critical aspect of good towing service is affordability. Affordability is actually not the same as the least price. There are two components to affordability, the amount the service costs and the quality of the service. The cheapest towing service in the world is worthless if the tow truck ends up trashing your car through outdated equipment, poorly supporting the vehicle, or connecting the vehicle to the tow truck in the wrong way for example. The quality of the service covers all of the aspects mentioned above, professionalism, expertise, equipment, responsiveness. The most affordable tow truck companies balance the cost of their services with the quality of those services.
